Constitutional Duty
We, the people of India, have a huge respect for our Constitution and we hold it high with pride.
It is also our Fundamental Duty as prescribed by Article 51A in Part IVA of the constitution "to abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem"
But how many of us know our Constitution? Isn't it our duty towards our own Constitution to read, understand and spread its ideals?
The Indian Searchlight (TISL) has taken up this responsibility to spread the ideals of the Constitution as its daily broadcast. At least a few articles of the Constitution per day.
Day 1
We adopted, enacted and gave to ourselves The Constitution of India on 26th of November 1949 but it was enforced on 26th of January 1950. That is why we celebrate our Republic Day on January 26.
At the time of enactment the Constitution had following no. of parts, articles and schedules along with our Preamble :
Parts : 22
Articles : 395
Schedules : 8
As on date after 104 amendments currently the Constitution contains following no. of parts, articles, appendices and schedules along with our Preamble :
Parts : 25
Articles : 470
Schedules : 12
Appendices: 5
Each rule of law is covered by an Article in the Constitution. In a layman's terms you can say "Article 1" as "Rule no. 1". For the ease of understanding all of these articles are grouped into different Parts of the Constitution as per the subjects they cover.
For example the articles of Part III which is FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS deal with everything about the Fundamental Rights. Similarly, the articles of Part V which is THE UNION cover the laws related to the Union. These parts are sometimes sub divided into various Chapters to cover the constituent parts. For example, Part V (THE UNION) is further divided into 5 chapters to cover different parts of the Union.
Asides, schedules are like lists covering a particular matter. For example, the "First Schedule" contains the list detailing the states and territories of the Union of India whereas, the "Eighth Schedule" is the list of languages.
Moreover, appendices comprise of any appendix added in the Constitution. For example, Appendix I was 'The Constitution (Applicable to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 1954'.
