Constitution of India Day 2

Part - I : THE UNION AND ITS TERRITORY (Article 1 to 4)

As the name suggests Part - I of the Constitution of India gives the details regarding the political structure of India and defines its territories. It further provides provisions for admission of new States and various alterations with respect to existing States.

Let's see each of these 4 Articles contained in Part-I

Article 1 : Name and territory of the Union

This article broadly covers following points:

  1. India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of states. In other words, no part of the Indian Union can secede (break away) from it. Unlike, the U.S.A. which is a federation of states, India is a Union of states. India is sometimes called an ‘indestructible union of destructible states’. This point shall be more clear when we go through Article 3 in the coming days.

  2. The ‘First Schedule’ specifies the territories of Indian Union. Please note that whenever, there is a change in the structure of the territory of India, as per the virtue of Article 2 & 3, the First Schedule is updated accordingly.

  3. The territory of India comprises the States, Union Territories or other such territories as may be acquired. The example of ‘other such territories as may be acquired’ are the three territories, namely Goa, Daman and Diu, that were acquired by the means of a police action in 1961. Later they became Union territories in 1962.
